This Pact kills!
Transnational Action Day against the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum
10 April 2025 - Nothing to celebrate!
Everywhere, the same logics of oppression are strangling us. From Belgrade to Athens, from Rome to Brussels, governments stifle the most precarious, destroy solidarity and oppress those who refuse to bow down. They impose a world where survival is a daily struggle, where borders kill and where people are criminalized.
On 10 April 2024, the EU Parliament adopted the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum despite the fierce opposition of many of us. The Pact is a tool to organize and legitimize a cruel system of tracking, filtering, exploiting, detaining and deporting people. It intends to isolate, invisibilize, precaritize, and criminalize people arriving to Europe; it is de facto abolishing the right to move and to asylum in Europe.
This Pact kills solidarity. This Pact kills rights. This Pact kills people.
None of this is new; we are fighting against a racist, repressive and fascist continuum. What is new is that the Pact will be transposed into national law in all EU countries at once.
If that were not enough, in March 2025 the Commission announced a new legislative proposal to expedite deportations. If approved by the Parliament and Council, it will establish an expanded, neocolonial and brutal deportation regime, with third countries as accomplices.
Join us fighting this Pact and the Returns proposal that:
- Introduces new checks and will force migrants to provide their biometric data from the age of 6, cross-check them against criminal databases and store their data for at least 5 years.
- Prevents certain groups of people from entering EU territory and detain them in border centers while they apply for asylum, including children.
- Abolishes the substantive examination of asylum applications for large groups of people seeking protection, grants even less legal assistance and accelerates procedures.
- Generalizes detention situations and expands the hotspot approach, with even more people isolated in prison-like conditions while awaiting for a decision on their asylum application or their deportation.
- Creates interoperability between criminal and migration databases and law systems, reinforcing a stigmatising and criminalised view of migrants.
- Fails to establish real solidarity between EU Member States and allows them to pay money instead of taking in people.
- It injects even more money into brutal, racist and violent border control regimes, surveillance technologies, Frontex and police.
- Facilitates and encourages mass deportations and turns a blind eye to the illegal pushbacks happening at the borders.
- Perpetuates a racist and neocolonial approach through which the EU is offshoring the responsibility to protect people to third countries that are not safe.
- Exposes migrant people to even greater labour and other forms of exploitation by refusing them legal status.
- Increases violence against, stigmatisation and criminalization of people in the move throughout the EU.
This inhumane Pact will enter into application in June 2026.
The new rules are now being transposed into national legislation.
National administrations are changing now.
Prisons and fences are being built now.
The Pact is being used right now by national governments to establish even more fascist and racist policies.
It’s now the time to: Inform. Prepare. Resist. Disrupt.
We invite you to join forces and build a transnational anti-Pact front made of collectives and activists against the current European anti-migration policy. We must be present and strike everywhere at once: in the capitals of our countries, in the EU institutions, at the borders, in every detention center. We must continue to struggle for open borders, the decolonizing of Europe, and rights for all.
Join us on 10 April 2025 for a Transnational Action against the Pact!
On 10th April, simultaneous local actions will take place across Europe, Africa and Asia, including but not only :
- Direct actions to disturb the system of detention and exclusion
- Actions targeting the institutions in your city that are responsible for anti-migration policies and practices
- Direct support for people reaching the borders, in detention centres and camps
- Information/Poster campaigns about the consequences of the Pact
